Green Card Chaos: CBP Rejects Valid Travel Permit

combo card holders questioned at border

Imagine paying hundreds of dollars for a travel document, only to face hours of questioning and humiliation while using it. This is what many green card applicants in the US are now experiencing at border checkpoints.

Combo Card Holders Face Harassment

One traveller recently shared her experience at Toronto’s Pearson Airport (YYZ). She was held for over four hours after border officials questioned the validity of her combo card, a document that functions as both a work permit and advance parole.

She was finally allowed entry after a second officer stepped in and corrected the first. But the emotional toll had already taken effect.

Growing Reports from Other Travellers

Her story isn’t isolated. Many others using combo cards, whether at Toronto or land crossings like Buffalo, have reported being interrogated for hours. Questions ranged from personal relationships to employment and past travel.

In some cases, officers allegedly claimed they could impose a 10-year entry ban. Others told travellers that advance parole is not a valid travel document, even though it clearly states otherwise.

Misinformation or Misuse of Power?

Advance parole has long been recognised as a legal re-entry option for green card applicants, especially those applying through marriage. Yet many officers appear either poorly trained or are misusing their authority.

Some travellers have been advised not to leave the US again until they receive their green cards, even if they have valid documents.

Fear and Uncertainty Among Immigrants

With immigration checks becoming stricter under the current administration, many worry these actions are encouraged. The result is fear and confusion among families and workers who are simply trying to follow the law.

A System That Feels Broken

Advance parole is meant to offer stability and freedom to applicants awaiting green cards. Instead, people are facing threats, humiliation, and hours of stress at the border despite having paid all required fees and following every rule.

It’s not just a policy failure. For many, it feels like an attack on dignity.
