Mass F-1 visa terminations from last year continue to worry international students in the US. Even months after reinstatement orders, uncertainty persists. Several students remain unsure about their legal and travel status.
Sudden SEVIS Terminations in 2025
In early 2025, thousands of students found their SEVIS records terminated without warning. Many terminations were reportedly linked to minor issues such as speeding tickets or resolved cases, including situations with no convictions.
Visa Stamps Remain a Major Issue
Although courts later ordered SEVIS reinstatement, problems did not fully end. One affected student has shared that their F-1 visa stamp is still revoked despite their status being restored in the system.
Mismatch Between SEVIS and Visa Records
Federal SEVIS records now show lawful presence in the US along with an active OPT work permit. However, the physical visa stamp remains critical for international travel and re-entry into the country.
Systemic Gaps Between US Agencies
This situation exposes a major flaw in the immigration process. SEVIS is managed by the Department of Homeland Security, while visa stamps are issued by the US State Department. One system was corrected, but the other remains invalid.
Fading Attention and Growing Anxiety
Online discussions around F-1 terminations have slowed as attention shifts to H-1B visas and renewed crackdowns under the Trump administration. Many students remain stuck, trying to fix issues that should never have occurred.
