Indian Doctor Fined 1 Crore+

Indian Doctor Fined

An Indian-origin doctor, Dr Shanthi Chandran, has been ordered by a UK court to compensate a schoolgirl with approximately ₹1.41 crore in damages. The incident occurred in 2018, when the then-12-year-old pedestrian was struck by Dr Chandran’s BMW i3 Range Extender on a pedestrian crossing in Bicester, Oxfordshire.

Beyond the legalities, this case prompts us to reflect on the multifaceted nature of accidents and the intricacies of assigning blame. While the court ruled that Dr Chandran was primarily responsible for the collision, it also acknowledged the contributory negligence of the young girl stepping onto the road when the traffic lights were green.

This scenario underscores the importance of a nuanced perspective on road safety. Rather than a straightforward narrative of blame, accidents often result from a combination of factors. The court’s decision to apportion liability at 60/40 acknowledges this complexity, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding of incidents on the road.

Encompassing both individual responsibility and broader systemic considerations, each accident is a unique interplay of circumstances, demanding a nuanced examination to unravel the complex threads of responsibility and justice.
