On one hand, many NRIs make India proud with their achievements worldwide. On the other hand, a disturbing case in Singapore involves an NRI sentenced to 16 years in prison for a terrible rape.
The 26-year-old perpetrator was arrested and subsequently found guilty of sexually assaulting a college student in 2019. This horrific incident occurred in Singapore when the young woman was walking towards the bus stop, and the assailant misled her in the wrong direction before forcibly taking her to a secluded location and committing the rape.
Following the inhumane act, the perpetrator fled, leaving the victim with injuries and cuts. Despite her suffering, the young woman managed to contact her friends, who helped get her to the hospital for treatment. The brutality of the assault was so severe that even her boyfriend couldn’t recognize her when she arrived at the hospital. The perpetrator was eventually apprehended, but it took four years due to the need for multiple rounds of psychiatric evaluation.
Finally, the court sentenced him to 16 years in prison, along with 12 strokes of the cane as punishment for his vicious crime. Such crimes not only pose a constant threat to young women like the victim, who still experiences nightmares and self-destructive thoughts, but they also pose a threat to society as a whole.
