In 2023, there has been a remarkable surge in the influx of Indian students seeking education abroad, with expectations of over 1.5 million students enrolling in foreign universities this year.
According to data provided by the Ministry of Education, the number of Indian students who study abroad increased by almost 72% in the previous year.
This substantial increase can be attributed to the desire of Indian students to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, educational experiences, and lifestyles offered by foreign countries.
However, despite this surge, Indian students already pursuing education abroad are grappling with daunting challenges. The rising cost of living in foreign countries, combined with limited job opportunities, has led to significant hardships.
Notably, rents in the US and Canada range from $1,000 to $1,200 per month for single accommodations, with additional monthly expenses for food, transport, and utilities amounting to $1,000 to $1,200.
Some students have opted to return home, mirroring the unfortunate fate of Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi, a Hyderabad student who found herself in distress wandering the streets of Chicago recently.
The struggles of Indian students are not limited to Canada and the US. A student in London, for instance, shared her experiences of being fired from three restaurants in just two months due to overstaffing.
Despite these challenges, the allure of foreign education remains strong. An unprecedented number of Indian students are preparing to study abroad this fall, with some reports suggesting that this intake has doubled compared to the previous year.
