In the summer of 2020, the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic and amidst this, Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill, a physician of Indian origin living in Canada, took a brave stand against government-imposed lockdowns and vaccination mandates. Unfortunately, her outspoken views landed her in legal trouble and faced hefty legal fees.
But as it turns out, Gill might had not ran out of her luck as recently Elon Musk stepped in to support her. Musk pledged to cover her expenses, which amounted to a staggering CAD 300,000 (approximately USD 220,000). This gesture came after Musk learned about Dr. Gill’s crowdfunding campaign to pay off the judgment against her.
Dr. Gill’s opposition to COVID lockdowns and vaccination mandates had led to harassment from the media, censorship by Twitter, and investigations by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Despite facing all these challenges, Dr. Gill remained steadfast in her convictions.
Her tweet from August 2020 boldly stated, “If you have not yet figured out that we don’t need a vaccine, you are not paying attention. #FactsNotFear.” This tweet sparked controversy and resulted in the legal battles she faced.
In response to the backlash, Dr. Gill filed a lawsuit against 23 individuals and organizations, alleging defamation. However, the lawsuit was dismissed by a judge citing anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) laws. The judge ruled that Dr. Gill’s intention was to stifle her critics’ speech on a public platform.
Despite the setback, Elon Musk’s support has provided Dr. Gill with much-needed relief. His commitment to funding the remainder of her campaign will enable her to cover the hefty judgment and legal expenses.
