Indian Shop Owner Arrested in US

An Indian-origin man is facing criminal charges for crossing all limits to defend his shop and treating the shoplifter in an inhumane way.

In October 2024, Kaushalkumar Patel, 40, chased a man who had stolen a box of vape pens from his store in Kentucky. After the thief fled on foot, Patel and his accomplices cornered him, sprayed him in the face with pepper spray, and dragged him into a van.

The Indian shop owner didn’t stop at that and allegedly stomped on, sprayed the robber’s anus, and took him to a nearby garage to beat him again. After months, the police have finally arrested Patel, who is now facing charges of kidnapping, second-degree assault, and wanton endangerment.

This is not the only incident either as recently there has been a troubling trend of store owners going to extreme measures to punish suspected shoplifters. Just last month, a North Carolina store owner was convicted of manslaughter for killing a man accused of stealing.

There is no doubt that thieves deserve to be punished, but only through legal procedure. Patel taking the law into his own hands has backfired on him and put him behind bars instead.
