New Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he will be sticking to his promises. He has notified that he will be sticking to his plan to remove Indian military figures from the country.
From the start of the campaign, he seemed like a pro-China leader and has plans to stick to his stance. In his recent speech, he states, “The people have told us that they don’t want foreign military here.”
He stated that he won’t allow any foreign military or force to be instated in the country as people have faith in its system.
Previous President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was targeted with the fact that he allowed the unchecked presence of Indian military authorities. Though he tried to divert the allegations with the statement that it was done to strengthen the relation between both governments.
Now, after the victory of Muizzu, he is promising to focus on making a stronger bond with India and China. Both countries congratulated the election of Muizzu as China added, “respects the choice of the Maldivian people and congratulates President-elect Mohamed Muizzu.”
Indian PM Narendra Modi also took the opportunity to congratulate Muizzu on Twitter as he tweeted, “India remains committed to strengthening the time-tested India-Maldives bilateral relationship and enhancing our overall cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.”
