OPT Rejected Due to CPT

If you are an F-1 student in the US, you better make sure you stick to the rules, or else even a minor mistake can ruin your future. An OPT aspirant realized this the hard way when their temporary work permit was rejected due to CPT.

Taking to social media, the immigrant student shared that their OPT was denied after they overused the 365-day full-time CPT by just a week. They claim that it wasn’t intentional but in the eyes of the USCIS, there’s no room for mistakes.

This is not an isolated case either as many students unknowingly cross the CPT limit and meet a similar tragic fate. Once you’re over the line, you can try your best to have legal aid but in the end, you will be forced out of the US.

Social media users suggest enrolling in a new degree to reset the clock. Others seemed more practical and advised the F-1 student to go home and seek more opportunities there.

While this is a huge blunder on student’s part, it is shocking that universities do little to nothing to warn students. Colleges issue CPT I-20s freely but fail to track limits or send alerts when the 12-month period is coming to an end.

Something needs to be put in place to give constant reminders to CPT students. Until then, take note and beware of your deadlines as even a single day can ruin your OPT chances.
