President Kamala Harris: Good or Bad For India?

Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris is on the brink of creating history as she is giving a tough fight to her Republican rival Donald Trump in the 2024 elections. But what does it mean to have an Indian-origin President sitting in the White House?

Kamala Harris doesn’t shy away from her Indian descent. She boasts about coming from a middle-class family and her mother’s upbringing in Chennai.

However, when it comes to politics her administration could bring both opportunities and challenges for the India-US relationship.

The Democratic candidate will likely continue Biden’s policies which could work well for India. Both countries have strong ties in defense, cyber security, and technology which is expected to bloom under Kamala Harris.

On the other hand, the US Vice President hasn’t always been friendly towards Modi’s government. She criticized the abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir and the government’s handling of the situation.

This could lead to tension between the two nations. Unlike Biden, who took a softer approach with Modi, Harris might take a tougher stance on human rights issues.

On trade, she seems like a better choice for India than Trump who has vowed to increase tariffs on Indian goods. Unlike her rival, Kamala Harris is focused on taxing the rich and supporting the middle class to boost the US economy.

While her Indian background will be a matter of pride for the country, India can never rest assured when Kamala Harris is at the helm. It all depends on whether she can beat Donald Trump in what looks like a close race.
