The United Kingdom is set to roll out its ambitious yet highly controversial new Immigration policy which will allow the government to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. The government is planning to start sending flights to Rwanda in the next 9 to 11 weeks.
This new policy of Rishi Sunak’s government has drawn criticism from many international human rights groups. The government authorities have already started detaining illegal immigrants living in the country in order to send them to Rwanda.
It is believed that Rishi Sunak wants the first flight to Rwanda as soon as July. More than 7500 illegal migrants entered into the UK through France in the year 2024. Many people die in the journey as well as no safety is ensured on the boats used by these people.
The government believes that the new policy is going to stop people from illegally entering and putting their lives at risk. The Supreme court of the UK had declared this policy unlawful last year and therefore there’s a lot of opposition to it in the country.
Since the detentions have started, there’s a level of panic as it is not clear who all would be detained first for the initial flights and when would it take place.
