The UK government has unveiled a radical overhaul of its immigration policy, aimed at curbing numbers and creating a fairer system. The focal point of this shake-up is a substantial 48% increase in the salary threshold for skilled worker visas, impacting foreign nationals seeking employment in the UK. The threshold, now set at GBP 38,700, is a significant shift in the immigration landscape, with potential implications for industries relying on international talent.
Home Secretary James Cleverly emphasized the government’s commitment to a fair, consistent, legal, and sustainable immigration policy. The far-reaching five-point plan also includes restrictions on family members accompanying medics on Health and Care visas and a uniform salary requirement for family visa applicants.
The government’s proactive stance extends beyond worker visas, with plans to review the Graduate Route visa to safeguard the integrity of UK higher education.
Additionally, measures to eliminate discounted shortage labour from overseas aim to reform the visa application process for roles in high-demand sectors. This comprehensive immigration strategy responds to record-high migration figures, addressing concerns about sustainability and the impact on national resources.
