Police in Hyderabad have busted a fake international call centre that defrauded numerous US citizens. They have arrested a total of 115 members of the gang who impersonated as executives from huge e-commerce companies. Acting on reliable sources, the police raided the call centre which has been operational for the last two and half years, said Cyberabad Police Commissioner M Stephen Raveendra.
The police have revealed the mode of operation of the gang which collected personal information of US citizens and randomly called them using VoIP. The members of the gang would threaten the victim that a suspicious package has been received in their name and the US Custom And Border Protection will initiate legal action against them. They would then force the victim to purchase gift cards or vouchers in order to cancel the suspicious package.
The gang sold these voucher codes at a discounted rate on a website which in return paid them in cryptocurrency. With the help of local bitcoin vendors, they converted this cryptocurrency into Indian currency.
The police have registered a case and are going to investigate further into it. A total of 115 CPUs, 94 Monitors and 120 mobile phones have been seized from the location of the raid.
