Telugu-born-NRI Jaya Badiga created history by becoming the first Telugu woman appointed as a judge in the United States of America. She was recently appointed as a judge in the Sacramento County Superior Court in California.

Jaya stole the hearts of the Telugu people by starting off her swearing-in speech in her mother tongue. She began her speech by saying, “Mee andariki naa hrudayapurvaka swagatham.” She ended her speech with the Sanskrit mantra, “Asato Ma Sadgamaya”.

Jaya was born in Vijayawada and did her schooling in Hyderabad. She is the daughter of businessman and former Machilipatnam MP, Badiga Ramakrishna.

She did her graduation in Bachelor of Arts In Psychology and Political Science from 1991 to 1994 at Osmania University in Hyderabad.

Jaya did her Master’s degree in International Relations and International Communication from Boston University. Later, she got a Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University.

After clearing the California State Bar Examination in 2009, Jaya started her legal practice. From 2018-2022, she worked independently as a sole practitioner.

She has been working as a Court Commissioner since 2022 and is an expert in family law. She worked in family law for more than 10 years. Now, she has become the judge for the domestic violence and child support calendar, in Sacramento County Superior Court.
