In 2023, the US is expected to experience 60 mass murders, up from 31 in 2019 and 21 in 2020. By May 7, 202 mass shootings had occurred this year. Schools, retail malls, and other public venues have been attacked. Texas has the most mass shootings in 2023, 41. After horrific massacres, the state has consistently eased gun rules.
The latest mass shooting, at an Allen, Texas retail mall, killed eight people, including the shooter. At a Brownsville bus stop, a motorist murdered eight more people with their vehicle. Texas politicians from both parties demanded gun restrictions after the attacks. President Joe Biden has urged Congress to ban assault weapons, require universal background checks, and require safe storage, but no movement has been accomplished.
Besides conflict zones, the US has the most mass shootings. Despite the frequency of these atrocities, gun restriction is not politically feasible. Gun control advocates say the problem is gun proliferation, while opponents say the US Constitution protects the freedom to carry weapons. Many Americans are pushing for gun violence reform following the 2023 horrific shootings.
