The Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for a long time now and it looks like the West don’t know how to deal with it. The strained relationship between the US and Russia is one of the reasons there has been no progress towards peace. The US now looks East and wants India to use its influence over Putin.
The spokesperson of the United States Department of States acknowledged India’s long standing relationship with Russia and said that the US encourages India to use this relationship and help bring this war to an end.
He also addressed India as an important strategic partner for the US and its relationship with Russia makes India an even important stakeholder in the current political situation.
Prime Minister Modi’s photo with President Putin invited a lot of criticism from the Western media. This also forced the US to address the situation as many are not happy that India holds a friendly relationship with both the US and its supposed enemy.
India is the only big power right now with an influence on both the West and Putin. This is putting India in a beneficial position which can be used as a leverage.
