8 Vasantalu OTT

The Telugu film 8 Vasantalu, starring Ananthika Sanilkumar, Hanuraj Reddy, and Ravi Teja Duggirala, released on June 20 and ended up as a massive box office failure.

Directed by Phanindra Narsetti and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the film failed to connect with audiences despite the backing of a reputed production house.

8 Vasantalu will begin streaming on Netflix from July 11. Its digital release comes amid controversy and negative publicity that surrounded both the film and its director during promotions and post-release discussions.

Director Phanindra Narsetti stirred backlash during pre-release interviews by openly criticizing film critics. He questioned their credentials and accused them of lacking artistic understanding.

His aggressive tone and dismissive attitude led to widespread trolling on social media, where netizens mockingly labeled him as the “Arhata Star”.

The bigger controversy came after the release. At a press meet, the director was questioned about a highly sensitive scene in which a Brahmin priest in Kashi attempts to sexually assault the female lead and takes her to a slaughterhouse. The portrayal was seen by many as offensive and disrespectful to the Brahmin community.

Phanindra defended the scene by stating that the actions of a character should not be seen as a reflection of an entire community or caste. He urged viewers to consider the broader narrative context rather than jump to conclusions.

With the film now reaching a wider audience on Netflix, many believe the backlash could escalate.

While its theatrical run went mostly unnoticed, the OTT release may trigger fresh outrage, especially as clips from the controversial scenes are expected to go viral. If that happens, the makers could find themselves in deeper trouble in the days to come.
