The US based media house Walt Disney Co. is holding discussions to completely sell its India assets. The multi billion dollar entertainment company is holding talks with potential buyers and among the front runners is Gautam Adani. There are still speculations about whether Disney would sell off its India business completely or dilute its equity as both options are on the table.
Streaming platform based business seem to have witnessed significant changes this year with Mukesh Ambani emerging as a significant player bagging the rights to broadcast IPL. JioCinema has also bought the rights to broadcast Warner Bros Discovery Inc’s HBO content which was previously with Disney.
There seem to be direct competition between Disney and Jio in the industry now. Jio earlier broadcasted IPL for free and Disney is following the same tactic with the Cricket World Cup. This rivalry also looks like a struggle for survival as this is a crucial deciding point in the course of the industry.
It is also possible that Mukesh Ambani’s Jio try to buy out Disney. If this happens then Jio will have no competition in this arena. On the other hand if Gautam Adani purchases Disney, it’ll result in a direct rivalry between the two richest person of India. Among the other potential buyers is the Sun Network owned by Kalanithi Maran.
