There’s no denying that Imtiaz Ali has a huge fan base. The guy is known for telling some amazing stories that deal with human emotions like nobody else. But, like most of his filmography, “Chamkila” is also going through the same phase. Movies like “Tamasha” and “Laila Majnu” saw little initial audience when released but later gained the status of cult classics as audiences re-visited them.
“Chamkila,” which has just released on Netflix with the idea that if such movies can’t have a home run in theaters, at least they can find a good number of viewers on OTT platforms. But it seems that this is also a goal too difficult for this Diljit Dosanjh-starrer musical journey.
It’s a biopic of Amar Singh Chamkila, who was killed at the age of 27 along with his partner Amarjot Kaur, played by Parineeti Chopra. Since its release, the movie has gained huge praise. The performances, the musical journey it takes, the dialogues, and even the screenplay—everything is being appreciated. The movie is getting rave reviews, but what a movie actually wants is an audience, and that is where “Chamkila” again missed the mark.
Despite its brilliance and extensive promotions, it is getting mediocre views. Now, either the movie can slowly gain momentum, or it will be another Imtiaz Ali movie that might get its due credit in upcoming years. Have you seen “Chamkila” yet? Do let us know your thoughts.
