Disney+ brings this new action comedy TV series called “American Born Chinese” based on a graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang. It has an ensemble cast of Ben Wang, Jimmy Liu, Michelle Yeoh, and Ke Huy Quan.
Story follows the life of Jin Wang, a struggling high schooler, who meets Wei-Chen, a Taiwanese exchange student. Suddenly, he’s thrust into a battle between Chinese gods.
Ben Wang’s performance is praiseworthy as Jin in his debut role showcases his charm and great comic timing.
It is a great thing that American Born Chinese doesn’t feel the urge to spell everything out for folks who aren’t familiar with the references it’s making.
American Born Chinese is a fantastic mix of humor and thrilling martial-arts action. It tackles high stakes with lively energy and playful stylistic shifts in Wei-Chen and Jin’s parallel journeys.
