Director Miles Warren comes with an insightful coming-of-age movie called Bruiser” starrring Jalyn Hall, Trevante Rhodes and Shamier Anderson.
It is the story of a 14 year-old Darious who is pissed off for a bunch of reasons. His parents, Malcolm and Monica, ship him off to some fancy private school with rich kids. While his classmates are jetting off to Greece for summer vacation, Darious is stuck with his average life, unable to buy a new bike and getting bullied by white kids.
One of the best things about “Bruiser” is how it totally nails the whole teenage vibe: Darious totally brings back those feelings of being all unsure of yourself and wanting to break free from your boring hometown. He’s freaking out about his long-distance relationship falling apart, and you can practically feel his impatience and anxiety.
Miles Warren who has also co-written it really nailed it with these characters. They’re sympathetic, strong, and flawed, which gives the actors so much to work with. Warren is impressive in his debut. Can’t wait to see what he does next!
If you’ve liked Udaan, the Vikramaditya Motwane’s masterpiece. You will definitely love this one too. It is available on Disney+.
