Adapting such a legendary Anime and turning it into a live-action series, on paper, this was one of the most difficult tasks they could have chosen. Now, yesterday, Netflix started streaming their live-action adaptation of One Piece, and just in time, the audience reactions are hitting the social media platforms. The question is, will the live adaptation divide the fanbase or can they keep it “in one piece”?
Netflix has delved deep into the world of adaptations, producing series like The Witcher, Death Note, and Rurouni Kenshin. In this long list, some adaptations have been more iconic than others, making people question the credibility of the streaming platform.
When it comes to the adaptation of One Piece, it is off to a flying start with an 8.6 rating on IMDb, and 95% of the audience liked this series on Google. This is a refreshing beginning for any adaptation on the streaming platform, and as more people talk about it, fans are accepting it in a very positive way.
Right from the beginning of the show, the casting looks as spot-on as it can get. Especially the characters of Luffy, Nami, Zoro, and Sanji, they all seem to have nailed their roles, and even hardcore fans are hyped about it.
Secondly, the fighting sequences are widely discussed all over social media. Especially, Zoro fighting Mihawk grabs mass attention, and as you can expect, certain parallels have been drawn.

When adapting a long show like One Piece, there’s always the dilemma of pacing. For the sake of rationality, you can’t expect the same pacing in a live adaptation, but the makers did a spectacular job.
Even if we talk about just the animations, it is indeed great work, especially when it comes to showing the power of Luffy and even Buggy the Clown. This is a tough task in terms of a live adaptation.
They also captured the spirit of the Arlong arc, which is challenging to bring to life, given its iconic status. However, Netflix seems to be cooking up something tasty that lives up to the fans’ standards.
Besides all the positive aspects, there are some downsides, which is a common occurrence when adapting something so spectacular. They are treating Eiichiro Oda’s iconic craft well, but as one scholar said, ‘To Err is Human,’ there are some aspects that aren’t really loved by the masses.
One critic noted, “The Netflix Live Action Series Is a Cliffs Notes Version of the Popular Anime.” This is understandable as the adaptation is too fast for anime fans. Most of them have invested years in this, and as the show is missing many beloved aspects of the manga and anime, it may seem diluted.
Even in terms of storytelling, they messed up certain sequences, which is considered a sin by the fans. It’s understandable for the sake of pacing, but it also takes away a lot from the originality and the depth of emotions.
In a group of good casting choices, Shanks comes across as a somewhat iffy part of the show. But certain aspects of him actually make up for it.
Interestingly, Oda contributed a lot to the series. With certain reshoots and script changes, you are presented with something as grand as One Piece. The live adaptation certainly doesn’t disappoint, at least for casual fans. And if you are a hardcore fan of the franchise, you can watch it with a free mind. It won’t let you down in certain aspects.
Looks like the embargo to talk about #OnePieceNetflix has dropped and am happy to report it's a real blast! As someone who didn't know anything about it prior, I found myself very moved by its characters and energy, and it even got me to finally dive into the anime! pic.twitter.com/0mSSFGX0XR

The news is out. I've seen Netflix's One Piece, and while I cannot say much, I can say this before all my coverage goes live:
I've watched season one several times now. It is *good* good.
