If we are told that an event was the most watched live broadcast in the history of television, we are likely to believe that it must be a globally important event. Huge sporting events like World Cups and The Olympics often bring such viewership. But what if I tell you that the sport that featured in this event isn’t even popular anywhere outside the US.
The Super Bowl game between The Chiefs and 49ers became the most watched live broadcast ever drawing an average viewership of 123.4 million. It means that at any given point, an average of 123.4 million people were watching the game.
This comes as a bit shocking to Indians as even the biggest cricketing event like the World Cup final managed to have an average viewership of 58 million. When compared with American Football, cricket has a much larger viewer base and is very popular in at least a dozen countries.
The star studded Super Bowl is a grand affair in the US and all major celebrities are usually present there. Taylor Swift and her presence was among the most discussed non-sporting affairs at this year’s Super Bowl.
