OTT platforms have emerged as the primary source of entertainment in the digital age, leading to the emergence of various digital platforms in recent years. Even the number of viewers for OTT content has been constantly increasing every year.
As of January 2024, YouTube remains the largest streaming app on the internet in India. Of a total of 524 million internet audiences, 456 million are using YouTube.
Disney+ Hotstar secured the second position with 114 million visitors, followed by Jio Cinema, MX Player, and Zee5, with 101 million, 93 million, and 57 million unique visitors, respectively.
In contrast, Netflix has 42 million unique visitors, while Sony LIV and Amazon Prime Video are lagging with 26 million and 19 million, respectively. The relatively low user base of streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video in India is attributed to their high subscription prices.
The recent merger of Jio and Hotstar is expected to significantly increase their combined viewership, especially considering their strong presence in sports streaming and access to top international shows.
Jio and Hotstar are currently the leaders in sports streaming, with Jio also offering all HBO content. Therefore, we can witness a substantial increase in the subscription base for the merged platform soon.
