Hotstar Reigns Despite Heavy Losses

Disney+ HotstarOn paper, Disney+ Hotstar should have a massive downfall, they lost their biggest charms. It was the biggest sports hub of the nation, and acquired the streaming rights of IPL, Formula 1 racing, and the beloved HBO content but they had to bend their knees in front of Ambani Owned JioCinema.

Hotstar lost most of its major attention-grabbing content including IPL, F1, and HBO content but statistically, they are still sitting at the top of the podium in the Indian market. Hotstar holds 29% of the total market share even after a massive dwindling of subscribers. The streaming platform had 61 million subscribers in October 2022 and as of the first quarter of 2023, it lost 11 million of them.

The competition however, is just too scant. In fact, the average revenue per person has only increased in the last few months.

Maybe the reason behind is the addictive TV serials like Anupama and more.

Amid all the losses, Hotstar is still one popular hub for entertainment in India. The streaming platform still owns 123 of the top 500 most popular shows in India, Just behind Prime Video. So even after a humongous loss of content, Hotstar is holding their place and there is no sign of dethroning them anytime soon.
