Suriya’s mass commercial entertainer Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji, was released in theatres on May 15 and went on to become a major box office success. The film reportedly collected more than ₹300 crore worldwide during its theatrical run.
Following its successful performance in cinemas, Karuppu began streaming on Prime Video yesterday. The film is available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
With the film arriving on OTT, viewers who missed it in theatres have started sharing their reactions on social media. While many expected Karuppu to enjoy the same level of success on streaming platforms, the online response has been mixed.
Some viewers have described Karuppu as an overrated film, arguing that it relies heavily on a few standout moments. According to these reactions, the storyline lacks enough depth to sustain interest, particularly during the second half.
A section of the audience has also criticised RJ Balaji’s execution, claiming that the film offers only a handful of mass elevation scenes while falling short in other areas.
Apart from the narrative, some social media users have pointed out issues with the visual effects. Several posts have highlighted screenshots from portions featuring Singam Suriya, where viewers felt the visual presentation looked inconsistent.
Some users have specifically criticised the VFX quality, claiming that certain scenes appear unpolished. These discussions have become a major topic among OTT viewers since the film’s digital release.
Another point of debate has been the visual presentation of the OTT version. Social media users have shared comparison screenshots between the theatrical and streaming versions, suggesting that the colour grading appears darker on OTT.
According to these viewers, the visuals in the streaming version look dull compared to what they experienced in theatres. These observations have added to the ongoing discussion surrounding the film’s digital release.
Despite the criticism, Karuppu remains one of the biggest commercial successes of the year. It remains to be seen whether the mixed social media reactions will impact its long-term performance on Prime Video and overall viewership numbers.
