Lokah: Chapter 1 Chandra, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, has become a massive Malayalam hit. Made on a budget of Rs. 30 crores, the film has grossed over Rs. 300 crores worldwide, surpassing L2: Empuraan as the industry’s biggest success.
Reports confirm that Lokah will soon stream on an OTT platform. JioHotstar has acquired its digital rights for a record price after the film’s strong theatrical run. The makers had delayed the release while the movie continued to draw audiences to cinemas. Sources now suggest an OTT premiere on October 17th or 20th, just before Diwali.
The film’s release also sparked controversy. Some viewers accused Lokah of portraying Hindus negatively. They pointed to scenes involving a Hindu king burning a temple, Christian missionaries shown as saviors, a Lord Vinayaka idol treated disrespectfully, and a Hindu villain killing his mother before deity statues.
These moments led to online debate about whether Malayalam cinema often casts Hindu characters in a negative light. With the OTT release approaching, many expect the conversation to intensify as viewers revisit those scenes more closely.
Despite the backlash, Lokah: Chapter 1 Chandra remains one of the year’s most loved blockbusters. Fans are now waiting eagerly for its digital debut and the next chapter in this ambitious Malayalam cinematic universe.
