South Indian cinema has consistently raised the bar every year, with films like “RRR” achieving worldwide recognition at the Oscars. Additionally, “The Elephant Whispers,” a Tamil documentary, garnered significant praise as well as an Oscar. Now, a Malayalam movie named 2018 has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars in 2024.
India was engrossed in the controversy surrounding The Kerala Story. Some individuals pointed out propaganda while others offered their support. A Malayalam movie called “2018” was released simultaneously. This film highlighted the unity and solidarity among Keralites during the 2018 floods, showcasing how people came together during those trying times. “2018” went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time, yet it received minimal attention in North India. Now, it has been chosen as India’s official Oscar entry.
“2018” is a disaster movie directed by Jude Anthony Joseph, featuring Tovino Thomas in the lead role, who is also known for his role in the popular superhero movie “Minnal Murali.” Other than him, the movie also features Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain and Lal.
