The first season of Dong-hyuk’s “Squid Game,” consisting of nine episodes, premiered in 2021. A first for a non-English-language series, the drama about a deadly competition between impoverished rivals to win 45.6 billion turned out to be an all-time mega hit for Netflix. It received 14 Emmy nominations, including best drama series, for which it won six of them.
At the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, “Squid Game” created history as well by being the first Korean series and the first non-English series to receive nominations for stunt ensemble, cast in a drama series, actor in a drama series (Lee Jung-jae), and actress in a drama series (Jung Ho-yeon). The winners were Ho-yeon and Lee Jung-jae. Three Golden Globes were also won by “Squid Game,” including best TV drama.
Netflix officially announced in January 2022 that a second season of the show would air after months of rumours about whether or not it would. During an analyst call, Ted Sarandos, the CEO of Netflix, stated, “Absolutely.” The world of “Squid Game” is only getting started.
Since then, the world of “Squid Game” has grown to include a planned video game, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and an unscripted competition series.
On Tuesday, Netflix released its Q4 2023 earnings, which came after the early morning announcement that it had finalised a significant agreement to broadcast WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” starting in 2025.
