The Indian film industry has once again seen a rise in projects featuring ensemble casts, which at one time used to be the industry staple with blockbusters like Sholay (1975) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) being ensembles, featuring a wide array of actors in an equally important role.
There has been a splurge of ensemble content, especially on OTT platforms. Shows like IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, Delhi Crime, and Jubilee often prove that having multiple characters in a show with each one contributing equally to the storyline and pushing the narrative collectively can have a massive impact on the show’s success.

OTT platforms have stepped forward to take a massive lead over traditional cinema when it comes to ensembles. This is due to the fact that OTTs are free from many of the limitations, particularly the time limitations, that bind the traditional cinema.
This gives OTT shows the freedom to give depth to their storyline, liberally pursue character development, and step away from the traditional path of having a single main protagonist. Shows have the ability to weave the stories of multiple parallel characters together, each having as important a role as the others.

Managing an ensemble cast can be as much difficult because one has to manage the egos of every individual member. For an ensemble to be successful, the actors need to put their personal glory on the backseat and work as a team, acknowledging each other’s contributions to drive the narrative ahead.
In the end, ensembles provide a rich cinematic experience to the viewers, diving deep into intricate storylines and building up elaborate characters.
