In a remarkable turn of events, the Disney+ original series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has soared to unprecedented heights, breaking streaming records and leaving an indelible mark on the platform’s history.
According to the newly released Nielsen streaming chart, the debut season of Percy Jackson not only dominated Disney+ but also secured its place as the fourth most-watched show across all streaming services in the week of December 18.
With an astounding 572 million minutes viewed during its inaugural week, the series outperformed all Disney+ live-action debuts in 2023, excluding the formidable “Ahsoka.”
The fantasy show, adapted from Rick Riordan’s beloved book series, introduces viewers to the mythical world of Greek gods through the eyes of 12-year-old Percy Jackson, portrayed by Walker Scobell.
The narrative follows Percy’s journey from discovering his divine lineage as the son of Poseidon to embarking on a quest with his companions, the satyr Grover and Athena’s daughter Annabeth.
What makes this achievement even more notable is that Percy Jackson achieved this milestone with a cast largely comprised of relative unknowns, with Walker Scobell being the notable exception.
The success of the show becomes even more apparent when compared to Disney’s flagship franchises, Marvel and Star Wars. Notably, Percy Jackson surpassed all Marvel debuts in 2023, a testament to its widespread appeal.
The only contender that managed to surpass Percy Jackson’s debut week performance was “Ahsoka,” a Star Wars spinoff that streamed for an impressive 829 million minutes during its inaugural week.
Nevertheless, Percy Jackson’s triumph has solidified its position as the most-viewed debut week for a non-Marvel, non-Star Wars show on Disney+ since Nielsen began measuring streaming in March 2020.
