The Indian mainstream cinema in recent years has faced a lot of criticism for serving a fixed platter over and over with a new name and look. Although these archetypal movies do profit on big screens, their artistic value is often questioned. But it would be wrong to say there lies no brilliance in Indian cinema, perhaps we’re looking for it at the wrong place.
Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light created history at Cannes by becoming the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix. It serves as an inspiration for filmmakers like Karan Kandhari, whose ‘Sister Midnight’ is a surreal take on modern arranged marriages.
Radhika Apte stars in this movie as Uma who fails to stand up to the typical expectations from a woman in an arranged marriage. Karan Kandhari is an Indian origin filmmaker based in London.
The filmmaker’s use of comedy is appreciated by many critics and his cultural representation of the people as well. The film uses music ranging from Bengali folk to American punk. Sister Midnight featured at Cannes on the 19th of May, 2024.
