No publicity is bad publicity, that’s true for the numbers but when it comes to viewing experience and quality, it is destined to deteriorate. The new HBO drama has been the talk of the town and for all the wrong reasons. Social media is fuming over ‘The Idol’ and it’s all because of a sex scene.
The controversial scene features Tedros, The Weekend, and Lily-Rose Depp’s character, Jocelyn. The scene made the viewers disgusted as it imitates a rape scene. The viewers are also questioning this scene crossing the line. Now, freedom of expression is important in any art form but to what extent?
The sex scene was a part of the recent episode and the fans of The Weekend showed their disappointment on social media after the episode aired. Some are even pointing out that it might defame or degrade the image of the star.
If a sex scene is remotely necessary for the storyline, that’s more than fine. But if it leaves a bad taste among the viewers, and crosses the line without no reason, the questions will be raised.
Before this, people were disappointed at the writing of the story too. Now this show had immense potential but bad writing brought it down to the ground.
About the specific sex scene, people are commenting that it was cringe and unnecessary. People are even loving Lily-Rose Depp’s performance in the series but The Weekend and the bad writing of his character Tedros is letting the viewers down.
The series is currently streaming on JioCinema but with such bad reviews, the numbers might crumble.
Here are some of the reactions that are hovering over the internet, and fans are clearly not loving it.
I can’t take The Weeknd’s acting serious #TheIdol

Watching The Idol you can see the crumbs of what the show could have been. Lily Rose Depp is great but can only do so much with what she’s given. Sam Levinson and The Weeknd really bring it down especially this episode. The rest of the cast is great but the writing YIKES. #theidol pic.twitter.com/zqBJz9eTqz

Nah cuz who’s gonna talk about the “He’s so rapey”…”I kinda like that about him” scene…. Made me sick to my stomach; a direct reminder that this emotionally and physically intimate scene between two (platonic) women was clearly written by a man, for the male gaze. #TheIdolHBO

When your script is triggering a rape survivor into crying in the shower you’re no better than a rapist. ♀️ I think people need to keep calling these men out, #THEIDOL is just telling us what we already know. Men obsessively love raping women. going to practice my ukulele now
