The digital and Blu-ray release dates for The Colour Purple have been disclosed, after the film’s December release. The film, directed by Blitz Bazawule, is based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name and follows an adaptation by famed filmmaker Steven Spielberg in 1985.
Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and Colman Domingo feature in The Colour Purple, which tells the narrative of a woman who finds strength in sisterhood in rural 1920s Georgia.
The Colour Purple has received favorable reviews, with critics generally preferring Bazawule’s picture to Spielberg’s 1985 remake. The picture presently has a solid 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, topping Spielberg’s 73%. However, the film’s box office performance has not been as high as projected, with a current domestic total of $58.5 million.
The international release date is January 18, and the box office performance thus far does not reflect the full picture. Colour Purple’s production budget is projected to be above $100 million, and while it may fail to recoup its costs in theatres, it might do well on VOD and physical media. The Colour Purple’s box office success is only part of the picture; the film is set to release on January 18.
