Toaster, starring Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra, premiered on Netflix on April 15, 2026. Directed by Vivek Das Chaudhary, the film attempts to blend dark comedy with everyday absurd situations. It builds its story around a small incident that turns chaotic.
The plot follows Ramakant, played by Rajkummar Rao, whose obsession with retrieving an expensive toaster drives the narrative. The appliance was originally a wedding gift. He tries to get it back after learning that the marriage has been called off.
Rajkummar Rao once again delivers with his familiar comic timing. However, several viewers feel the performance appears repetitive. It leans on known quirks and feels similar to his roles in Stree and Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video.
Sanya Malhotra gets limited scope in the story and remains underutilised. Her character lacks depth and influence on the plot. In contrast, Archana Puran Singh manages to leave an impact despite uneven character writing.
Cameos by Farah Khan, Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa add brief moments of interest. However, they do not contribute much to the story. Instead, they feel like distractions rather than meaningful additions to the narrative.
The film’s biggest weakness lies in its writing. It depends heavily on a single trait, Ramakant’s stinginess. While the humour works at times in the first half, it becomes repetitive and predictable as the story moves forward.
A twist in the middle introduces darker elements to the story. However, it disrupts the narrative flow. The second half then feels disjointed and lacks emotional depth and clarity in its theme.
Many viewers still appreciate Rajkummar Rao’s consistency and screen presence. At the same time, there is a growing feeling that he should explore different roles. Sanya Malhotra also deserves stronger parts like her performance in Mrs.
Based on early reactions, Toaster appears to be a one time watch. It may appeal to audiences who enjoy light dark comedy. However, it does not fully deliver on its potential.
