HBO made an announcement that their critically acclaimed crime anthology show True Detective will now have its fifth season renewed. The news comes after a four season, Night Country, which was a top installment among all seasons of the show, became the most watched one.
Nic Pizzolatto, who had previously written the first three seasons, was not the creator of the first seasons. In the contrary of that, the showrunner was Issa López, a Mexican filmmaker recognized for her horror-fantasy film Tigers Are Not Afraid. Lopez will be back for season five and will be part of a new over all deal with HBO.
Details regarding the fifth season are still hidden, but López has already shared how thrilling it is to launch a new story and a new cast to the True Detective’s universe. She said in a statement: “From conception to release, Night Country has been the sweetest and most amazing collaboration and adventure ever led and I will never forget it.”
The show is an anthology series where each season is dedicated to a different crime case and the consequences of the crime on detectives and victims. Seasons are replaced by cast, setting, and time period being changed every time. The first season featured the casting of Mathew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives in Louisiana who are tasked with solving a series of ritual murders.
The new season of True Detective 5 will premier on HBO and HBO Max in 2025. Catching up on the previous episodes can be done with the same platforms.
