Unbelievable: Flop Films Ruling On OTT

OTT Releases

It is not compulsory that films that did well in theaters would do well even on OTT and the films that didn’t do well in theaters would flop on OTT as well.

Take, for example, the successes of “Dunki,” “Guntur Kaaram,” “Hi Papa,” and “Annapoorani” on Netflix.

“Dunki” didn’t flop in theaters, but it didn’t resonate well with the theatrical audience due to its implausible plot and outdated storytelling. However, since its release on Netflix, it’s been a huge hit, consistently trending at number one in India for the past 19 days.

Globally, it ranked 8th among the top 10 non-English films on Netflix from February 26 to March 3, with over 11 million views so far.

Similarly, “Guntur Kaaram” had an average run at the box office but has surpassed expectations on Netflix, including its Hindi version, with around 5 million views.

“Hi Papa,” starring Nani and Mrunal Thakur, failed to make a mark in theaters in the Hindi belts but has been received warmly on Netflix. The emotional depth of the story, combined with stellar performances, has struck a chord with Hindi audiences, garnering over 4.3 million views.

Even “Annapoorani,” which bombed in theaters, found success on OTT platforms, accumulating 3 million views, all thanks to the silly communal controversy it created after its premiere. In a normal scenario, it would have flopped on OTT as well.

Sandee Reddy Vanga’s Animal is ruling on top in terms of views (13.6 Million). The shocker is that Salaar hasn’t performed as per expectations with only 3.5 Million views.
