Netflix brings season 2 of Vinland Saga which is a very famous seinen (adult) anime. The series started streaming in January and ended last week. Earlier it was considered a weak and slow plot but the director managed to pull off the story and the protagonist’s journey of redemption convincingly.
Vinland Saga’s second season, produced by Studio Mappa and based on the manga by Makoto Yukimura, concluded with a profound exploration of the cycle of violence and the horrors of war. The series beautifully depicted Thorfinn’s transformative journey, making it one of the standout shows of 2023.
Season 2 focuses on Thorfinn’s dramatic transformation from a vengeful killing machine to a deeply apathetic individual. His journey as a slave unexpectedly becomes his ultimate salvation after the death of his target, Askeladd.
Throughout the season, Thorfinn confronts the haunting guilt of his past actions and vows to reject violence. His ultimate goal becomes compensating for his sins by creating a world free from war and slavery.
Thorfinn returns to his village in Iceland and finds acceptance among the villagers. These heartfelt moments of kindness and joy are a well-deserved respite after the hardships Thorfinn and Einar faced as slaves on Ketil’s Farm.”
Vinland Saga seamlessly transitions through various genres, from war and politics to slice of life, all within the rich Viking Culture. Thorfinn’s transformative journey, evolving from a vengeance-driven child to the anime’s sole pacifist, serves as the unifying thread throughout these diverse phases of the story.
Apart from being a beautiful story, Vinland Saga is also technically brilliant. The animation quality is one of the main highlights of this 24 episodes series. Although it does not have much of action but there are so many other elements that keeps you hooked through out the season.
