Indian Govt Bans Web Series on Gangster: OTT Fights Back

ZEE5 Lawrence series case

The OTT platform ZEE5 has approached the Delhi High Court after a government advisory blocked its upcoming docu series Lawrence of Punjab. The series is based on gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had asked the platform not to release the show. The series was originally scheduled to premiere on April 27, 2026.

The move came after concerns raised by the Punjab Police. Authorities believe the series could glorify organised crime and influence young viewers negatively.

A petition was also filed by Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. He demanded a complete ban, stating that such content could affect law and order in Punjab.

Following the advisory issued on April 24, ZEE5 has now taken legal action. The platform is seeking relief to protect its right to stream the content.

This case highlights the growing debate between regulation and creative freedom in India’s OTT space. Streaming platforms are increasingly facing scrutiny over sensitive content.

For now, the release of Lawrence of Punjab remains uncertain. The Delhi High Court will examine whether the advisory holds legal validity.

The outcome could have a wider impact on future biopics and documentaries. Projects based on controversial figures may face stricter checks depending on the verdict.
