Heartbreaking: 80 Years of Cinema Sold for 183 Crs

Filmistan Studios Sold

It’s truly a heartbreaking moment for Indian cinema lovers.

Another pillar of Bollywood’s golden age has fallen. After the emotional loss of RK Studios in 2019, we now hear that Filmistan Studio, one of India’s most iconic film studios, has been sold to real estate developers for 183 crores. This marks the end of an era that began more than 80 years ago.

Filmistan Studio was established in 1943 by Shashadhar Mukherjee, after he parted ways with Bombay Talkies. Interestingly, the studio was funded by Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam of Hyderabad, who supported Mukherjee and his team in setting up what would become a legendary institution in Indian cinema.

Over the decades, Filmistan gave us unforgettable classics like Shabnam, Shaheed, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Paying Guest, Munimji, and Anarkali.

In recent years, the studio continued to be relevant. It served as a shooting location for modern hits like Raazi (2018), The Dirty Picture (2011), Pagglait (2021), Pati Patni Aur Woh (2019), and parts of Brahmāstra (2022). Popular web series such as Sacred Games and Scam 1992 also shot key scenes on its premises.

All of that legacy will now be replaced by ultra-luxury residential towers, as Arkade Developers take over the land for redevelopment.

The studio, once alive with film units, camera crews, and creative energy, will soon become just another gated community in Mumbai’s skyline.

This sale reflects a growing and painful pattern — history is too often sacrificed for commercial gain. The emotional loss isn’t just about nostalgia.

It’s about how little effort is made to preserve the cultural landmarks that shaped Indian cinema. The end of Filmistan Studio is more than just a business decision. It’s the quiet fading of a chapter in film history that deserved protection and pride.
