In Bollywood, many actresses have ventured into production to back unique and socially relevant stories. But success as producers has eluded most, except a few.
Anushka Sharma is the rare one who has co-founded Clean Slate Filmz which has produced critically acclaimed and commercially successful films like NH10 and the hit web series Paatal Lok.
Her bold, offbeat storytelling and smart use of OTT has set the benchmark for actresses turned producers.
Others like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt have produced films that got critical acclaim but struggled commercially. Deepika’s Chhapaak and 83 were praised but didn’t do well at the box office.
Priyanka’s Purple Pebble Pictures focused on regional cinema with award winning but commercially limited films. Alia’s debut production Darlings was a streaming success but her theatrical release Jigra flopped at the box office.
Many actresses produce films driven by passion not business strategy, they choose unconventional themes that appeal to niche audience but lack mass appeal.
The male dominated industry also presents challenges in financing, distribution and networking which makes it tough for women producers to sustain their ventures.
Unless future actresses combine creative vision with business acumen, the struggle to find lasting success as producers will continue. For now, Anushka Sharma is the gold standard in this space.
