Sanjay Dutt and Shilpa Shetty recently launched the teaser for their new film KD – The Devil.
Infused with the periodic vibe of the 1970s, the teaser offers a glimpse into an action-packed world created under the directorial vision of Prem.
The teaser launch event turned out to be a star-studded affair. Acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan graced the event as the chief guest.
The event also featured a grand entry by the film’s cast, including Dhruva Sarja, Sanjay Dutt, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, and Reeshma Nanaiah, who arrived in style and engaged in an in-depth discussion about the film.
During the event, a journalist raised an important question regarding the ongoing Marathi language row.
She politely brought up the topic, saying that while learning another language is a great thing, what was their opinion about people being forced to learn it?
Upon hearing the question, Shilpa Shetty deferred to Sanjay Dutt to answer. However, Dutt pretended not to understand the question.
In the midst of this, the journalist’s mic was shut off so that she could not continue speaking.
When she pointed out that her mic had been turned off, Shilpa Shetty responded by saying that she is also a girl from Maharashtra, and they had gathered to discuss the film. She added that if people wanted to bring up other controversial topics, they would not be able to respond to those.
The controversy stems from a recent order by the Maharashtra state government to introduce Hindi as a third language in primary schools. The decision sparked major backlash from opposition parties and language advocacy groups. Although the BJP-led government has since reversed the decision, the debate continues.
While it is understandable that actors and celebrities may choose not to answer politically sensitive questions, shutting down a journalist’s mic to stop her from asking a valid question reflects poorly on the state of journalism in the country.
It all becomes a matter of controlled perception where people are prevented from answering certain questions, and others from even asking them.
It’s saddening to witness this as the current state of journalism in one of the world’s largest democracies.
