Bollywood, Please…Not Again! Cult Classic Remake?

Meiyazhagan Bollywood Remake

Meiyazhagan, starring Karthi and Arvind Swamy, was one of the most memorable and heartwarming films of 2024.

The story of the film is as simple as it gets — yet incredibly powerful, emotional, and heartfelt.

This movie didn’t succumb to mainstream demand for loud, musical, superhero-driven cinema and instead delivered a poetic, slice-of-life story.

With a film so simple and beautiful, rumours suggest that Bollywood is already eyeing it for yet another potentially disastrous remake.

Reportedly, Shahid Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter are being considered to star in the Hindi version of this film, which many believe is on its way to becoming a cult classic.

While there was a time when Bollywood remade films from the South and delivered hits, post-COVID, remakes are no longer working. Original films are already available on streaming platforms with subtitles and dubbed audio, making them easily accessible.

Instead of paying to watch poorly made Bollywood remakes, audiences now prefer to enjoy the well-crafted originals.

Hindi movies that were remade from other languages — like Cuttputlli (OTT release), Vikram Vedha, Bholaa, and the recent Deva — all failed at the box office.

Yet, it seems Bollywood still hasn’t learned its lesson.

While there has been no official announcement yet, fans have already taken to social media to express their anger over the rumours.

Shahid hasn’t delivered emotionally resonant characters like he used to, and his recent remakes have failed at the box office.

Ishaan Khatter, last seen in Netflix’s The Royals, didn’t leave much of an impression with his acting either.

Given Bollywood’s recent streak of ruining most remakes, fans are worried that this might be yet another masterpiece headed for disappointment.

If mere rumours have already sparked this kind of outrage, it will be interesting to see how fans react if Bollywood actually decides to go through with this remake.
