Mirzapur: OTT Brand Bigger Than Aamir, Salman & Akshay?

Mirzapur The Movie advance booking trend

The advance booking of Mirzapur: The Movie is pointing towards an interesting shift in the Hindi theatrical market. An OTT series with no traditional Bollywood superstar at the centre is now showing the potential to open bigger than films featuring established names like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar or Ajay Devgn.

Reportedly, Mirzapur: The Movie has sold around 14,000 tickets at the national chains for its opening day and could potentially reach the 1 lakh mark before release. That puts it in the same conversation as Awarapan 2, which managed a Rs. 20 crore plus opening despite not having a conventional superstar.

The real strength here is the Mirzapur brand. The web series has built enormous recall among the Hindi-speaking audience, particularly among the mass youth in North India. That audience now appears increasingly capable of driving a film’s opening on its own.

Characters like Guddu Pandit, Kaleen Bhaiya, and Munna Bhaiya have become audience favourites, while the series itself has been a cult classic. The story never failed to wow the viewers and the same has been expected from the film too.

That is the bigger concern for Bollywood‘s traditional star system. If an OTT franchise can generate stronger theatrical excitement than films featuring some of the industry’s biggest stars, then the question is no longer whether star power matters. It is whether star power alone is still enough.

The paying audience is clearly still there despite rising ticket prices. What has changed is the reason they are willing to pay.
