While every film has some kind of politics involved, some cover topics that are quite sensitive and prone to creating controversy. One such recent film is Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder.
Based on the true story of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, the film traces the events leading up to his brutal 2022 murder. It is directed by Bharat Shrinate and produced by Amit Jani.
Set to release tomorrow, the film has reportedly undergone 150 cuts following scrutiny by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
In a recent interview, the director spoke about how he had to make several rounds to the CBFC office for two months. He also claimed that the film is not about any religion or faith, it’s about ideology and truth.
Udaipur Files features Vijay Raaz in the role of Kanhaiya Lal, with supporting performances by Rajneesh Duggal, Preeti Jhangiani, Kamlesh Sawant, Kanchi Singh, and Mushtaq Khan.
Originally, the film was titled Gyanvapi Files: A Tailor’s Murder Story and was scheduled to release on June 27.
After the trailer dropped, the internet was livid, with many claiming the film seemed like yet another propaganda-filled venture.
If that wasn’t enough, the film is also facing a legal battle. According to reports, a petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on its release because of concerns over its potential impact on communal harmony and public order.
Recently, many films have triggered inflamed reactions over communally charged narratives. In an environment like this, a film like Udaipur Files is bound to stir unrest.
Everyone, the audience and the makers alike, is now waiting for a verdict, either from the CBFC or the Delhi High Court.
