Marvel’s journey may not be as marvelous with ‘The Marvels’ due to the potential competition from ‘Dune 2,’ which could dominate the theaters. The distribution of screens will again impact both movies, but one might be affected more than the other.
Marvel is already experiencing a slight decline in numbers. Although it’s not concerning yet, it’s still noteworthy. While Antman’s attempt was in vain, the Guardians indeed revamped Marvel’s image, but their recent November venture might cause a significant dent.
In a recent talk, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond expressed concerns regarding ‘The Marvels’ and praised ‘Dune 2.’ He mentioned that ‘Dune 2’ will have a “very long run time in IMAX,” lasting at least 5-6 weeks. Furthermore, he added, “There’s another great movie coming out around that time, which is ‘The Marvels’ from Marvel, and we can’t play it because we are committed to Dune.”
Regarding screen distribution, Oppenheimer and Barbie faced a similar fate, but their outcomes were very different. Neither had exclusive rights to IMAX screenings, allowing fans to have an unforgettable experience, and theaters capitalized on this significant opportunity.
Currently, ‘The Marvels’ is scheduled to release on November 10th, while ‘Dune’ has shifted its release date from November 17th to November 3rd.
The future seems somewhat uncertain for ‘The Marvels.’ However, there is a slight ray of hope as rumors suggest that the makers of Dune might postpone its release to 2024 due to ongoing strikes. If Dune gets a 2024 release, ‘The Marvels’ might have a field day as a Marvel movie with less competition. But for now, the lack of interest and big projects like Dune could suffocate ‘The Marvels.’
