Mark Ruffalo has joined the ongoing debate over Netflix’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The actor shared his concerns in a recent interview, adding to reactions from industry voices such as James Cameron.
The discussion centres on Netflix’s reported 72 billion dollar all cash offer for Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio and streaming operations. Paramount Global, backed by Skydance Media, has also submitted a rival bid. This has increased pressure on WBD’s board as it reviews the competing proposals.
Ruffalo said the film industry depends on a strong theatrical ecosystem. He stressed the need for diverse production hubs that create jobs and nurture new talent. According to him, cinema’s cultural value must be protected even as business models evolve.
He echoed concerns raised by other filmmakers who fear that large scale consolidation could weaken traditional film production and theatrical distribution. Many believe that a single global streaming giant may reshape the industry in ways that limit creative diversity.
James Cameron recently warned that the Netflix deal could result in fewer big budget films and possible theatre closures. Ruffalo acknowledged that streaming platforms have transformed content consumption. However, he insisted that innovation must be balanced with safeguards for theatres and industry workers.
Netflix has defended its proposal, stating that it offers clarity and value for shareholders. Meanwhile, Paramount Global has described the decision timeline as unusual and expressed willingness to negotiate. US lawmakers are also watching closely due to antitrust and market concentration concerns.
