Superman will be filmed in IMAX, a large-scale format that has grown to be the preferred shooting method for many blockbuster directors, according to James Gunn.

The film is not the first about Superman to be partially shot in IMAX; Zack Snyder previously used IMAX digital cameras to film Wonder Woman 1984, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Blue Beetle, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Following the release of video from the film’s European locales, the confirmation was made.

With recent releases of Avatar: The Way of Water, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, No Time to Die, and Jordan Peele’s Nope, IMAX has gained popularity in mainstream movies. On July 11, 2025, Gunn’s Superman—originally named Superman: Legacy—will hit theatres.

With David Cornswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and a cast of DC superheroes that includes Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), the movie will usher in a new era of DC filmography.

Gunn has previously worked with IMAX on digital shoots for The Suicide Squad (2021) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
