After nearly a month in theatres, Paul King’s Wonka has made more than $500 million globally. The musical has reached a milestone after generating $329.1 million in overseas markets, in addition to $176 million in the United States and Canada.
The feat propels Wonka to the second highest-grossing Warner Bros. film of 2023, after only Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster hit Barbie. With no home media release date in sight, the film portraying the beginning of the young inventor’s career has some time to build on its $505 million worldwide box office total.
Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka depicts a juvenile version of the titular character, Willy Wonka, as he battles to market his creations and flees Mrs. Scrubitt (Olivia Colman) in her hotel. Willy, with the aid of Noodle (Calah Lane) and others duped into remaining at Mrs. Scrubbit’s shop hopes to position himself as the adored chocolate maker.
The supporting ensemble includes Sally Hawkins as Wonka’s mother, Hugh Grant as Lofty, and Matt Lucas, Keegan-Michael Key, and Rowan Atkinson in King’s newest film. The supporting ensemble brings Willy’s Genesis story to life with incredible skill, making Wonka the biggest smash of the Christmas season.
