Merlapaka Gandhi began his career with two back-to-back hits. Venkatadri Express and Express Raja established him as one of the most promising young directors in Telugu cinema.
Those successes earned him the chance to direct Nani in Krishnarjuna Yuddham. However, the film ended up as a big flop and slowed his career.
He bounced back with the OTT film Ek Mini Katha, which was praised for its storytelling. He later directed Maestro, the Telugu remake of Andhadhun. But since it was released directly on OTT, it failed to boost his career.
Things became even more difficult with Like Share & Subscribe, which was a box office disaster. After that failure, Merlapaka Gandhi stayed away from directing for nearly four years.
Now, he is hoping to make a strong comeback with Korean Kanakaraju, starring Varun Tej and Ritika Nayak.
The horror-comedy is based on an unusual story that connects Rayalaseema and Korea. The trailer has already created curiosity, and Gandhi is relying on comedy and commercial entertainment to attract audiences.
Interestingly, Varun Tej also badly needs a hit after back-to-back failures like Ghani, Gandeevadhari Arjuna, Operation Valentine, and Matka, which affected his market. That makes Korean Kanakaraju an important film for both the actor and the director.
The film also has the advantage of releasing on August 7 without facing any major Telugu competition. If the comedy works and the word of mouth is positive, it has a good chance of becoming a commercial success.
For Merlapaka Gandhi, it is a chance to prove that he still has what it takes to deliver a hit. A success with Korean Kanakaraju could revive not only his career but also Varun Tej’s.
